We at Ocean Brands have a dual obligation to protect our environment for future generations and to ensure that the resources from our oceans are harvested in responsible and sustainable methods.

Salmon
Ocean's Salmon is harvested from wild Canadian and Alaskan fisheries. These fisheries are MSC* (Marine Stewardship Council) certified. The MSC program is part of an integrated policy to develop and support sustainable fisheries. Salmon fisheries in Canada and Alaska are monitored and managed by their respective governments. In cooperation with First Nations, fishermen and processors the collective goal is managed fisheries that meet the criteria and principles for sustainable fishing.

Ocean's is the first seafood brand in Canada to run a major national advertising program promoting MSC certified salmon.

Tuna
Tuna stocks are highly migratory and move from one fishing area to the next sometimes traveling thousands of kilometres. Stock levels vary from one region to the next as do the management practices.

Ocean's policy is to procure tuna from regions that are fished at sustainable levels. Part of our decision process is identifying regions that have an active management program comprised of governments, fisheries management organizations, and international tuna fleets working together on policy issues. We work closely with our suppliers, who in turn work with their fishing fleets to learn and implement measures that will reduce the bycatch of marine mammals and seabirds in the fishing methods that they employ, such as Pole & Line and FAD free fishing techniques. Ocean's has a Dolphin Friendly policy in place and has displayed the Dolphin Friendly symbol on its tuna labels since 1993. Ocean's was one of Canada's first tuna brands to display the Dolphin Friendly logo on its products. Ocean's also supports the creation and maintenance of specific marine protected areas determined by sound research with sustainability as its ultimate goal.

We believe in an open dialogue with interested groups and have set a program in place to communicate our objectives. Ocean's has been recognized for its sustainability policy, its commitment to avoid destructive fisheries and its support of equitable fishing.

* The MSC is the world's leading certification and eco-labelling program for sustainable seafood. The standards applied by the MSC ensure that MSC-labelled seafood comes from, and can be traced back to, a sustainable fishery.
