Fisheries
are constantly evolving. This is due to natural cycles
in fish stocks and trends such as population pressure
on habitat, climate change, and fishing. A strong base
has helped the resource adapt to these pressures. Here
is a brief summary of the state of the salmon fishery
in which we participate:
The
salmon resource in B.C. enjoyed a period of very favourable
conditions through the 1970's and 80's, which led to
record catches for all species through this period.
Entering the 90's, however, survival rates declined
dramatically, probably due to a natural cycle (regime
shift), habitat pressures, and climate change. As a
result, catches on the less productive stocks, particularly
Coho, were severely restricted and major fisheries closed.
Commercially important fisheries were cut back in order
to maintain adequate escapements. Generally this was
achieved.
