The environment belongs to each and every one of us. At Ocean's, it is also our most important asset. We have an obligation to protect our environment, just as everyone does, to preserve it for the future. We also need to protect it because our company's existence depends on ocean resources.

In 1989, we identified two major environmental issues affecting our industry; driftnet fishing in the Pacific and seine fishing for Yellowfin tuna in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. We developed a policy in response to these issues:

"Ocean Fisheries Ltd. will not purchase any tuna products that were caught in an area or by a method that endangers marine mammals." This policy means we will not harm dolphins or other marine mammals as we fish. We will not buy tuna from vessels that net fish associated with dolphins.

Our purchasing agreements require certification of dolphin-safe fishing practices from all our tuna suppliers. Our Dolphin Friendly policy has been certified by Earth Island Institute's International Marine Mammal Project after rigorous screening and assessment. Earth Island Institute approved monitors have access to our facilities and records to ensure that this policy is upheld.

salmon friendly, too!

We are also concerned about the wild salmon that inhabit our home waters off British Columbia. Ocean Fisheries Ltd. supports responsible, sustainable fisheries management practices. Our policy is to fully participate with the government bodies, fishers, First Nations, coastal communities and conservation groups to develop responsible management plans.

the danger of driftnets

High Seas Driftnet Fishing is an environmental disaster that has been largely reduced through international efforts. However we must remain vigilant to eliminate continued illegal activity. It not only indiscriminately kills dolphins and salmon, but every other type of marine life and water fowl that comes into contact with these 100 mile long walls of death.

At Ocean's, we have worked long and hard to lobby government officials and support private groups, such as Seacops, to help abolish this draconian method of fishing. We will continue our efforts to preserve the environment and ensure the preservation and enhancement of all species of marine life wherever possible.
